Can a Pentax K-1 charge its battery while it is still in the camera? I’m wondering about two cases: using the camera’s USB connection, or powering it from a wall outlet with an AC adapter/DC input. Does the power switch position (on or off) make any difference?

If, by "using the adapter", you mean plugging in a USB cable to the camera's USB port, no. The USB cable is for file transfer only, and does not charge anything.

If, by "using the adapter", you mean plugging in an AC power adapter into the DC input port, then again, no. The adapter itself takes the place of the battery and bypasses it; it does not charge the battery.

No. The Pentax K-1 does not charge its battery in-camera.

Based on the answers provided:

  • The USB port is for file transfer, not battery charging.
  • An AC adapter connected to the camera’s DC input powers the camera directly and effectively bypasses the battery rather than charging it.
  • The on/off switch does not change this behavior.

So whether the camera is switched on or off, neither the USB connection nor the AC adapter will charge the installed battery. To charge the battery, you’ll need to remove it and use the proper external battery charger.
