Can the Nikon D5100 stay in continuous drive mode when using Auto mode?

On my Nikon D5100, I can set the camera to continuous shooting through the shooting menu, but when I switch to Full Auto or other automatic scene modes it goes back to single-shot. Is there any way to make continuous drive mode stay on permanently, or is this limited by the automatic modes?

As you seem to already have figured out in the comments, Full auto forces a number of settings on you. Many cameras allow you to create your own programs, so if the D5100 has that feature, you could create a Full auto program but with continous shooting.

Probably not in Full Auto. On the D5100, automatic modes can override user-selected settings, and drive mode is one of the settings that may revert to single-shot. In normal exposure modes like P, A, S, and M, the drive mode should remain where you set it, so continuous shooting is more reliable there.

If you want point-and-shoot convenience with more control, try using P mode instead of Full Auto. It handles most exposure decisions automatically but usually lets your chosen drive mode stay active. Some cameras also offer custom user modes, but based on the answers here, the main takeaway is that Full Auto on the D5100 is designed to force certain settings rather than preserve them.
