Can the Nikon D300S show ISO changes in the viewfinder while adjusting them?

On a Nikon D300S, I want to change ISO while keeping my eye to the viewfinder in Manual mode. I reassigned ISO to the Fn button, which helps ergonomically, but when I change the value with the directional pad I don’t see the ISO update in the viewfinder until I confirm it. Is there a way to see ISO changes live in the viewfinder while adjusting them, or is the intended method to use the dedicated ISO button and command dial?

You can change the ISO by pressing the ISO key on the top left dial and then rotating the right/back dial.
Take a look at page 94 of the manual, the ISO value is also displayed in the viewfinder:

On a D90 I find this very convenient (even though it has a button on the right/back side), when pretending to press a button on the top right dial I find it convenient too.

Yes — on the D300S, the normal way to change ISO while looking through the viewfinder is to hold the dedicated ISO button and rotate the rear command dial. The ISO value is shown in the viewfinder during this operation.
Using the Fn button with the multi-selector is only a workaround, and it won’t behave the same way for live feedback in the finder. On this body, there isn’t a right-side control you can assign to direct ISO adjustment in a more Canon-like way.
If you want a different workflow, one workaround is to use Auto ISO in Manual mode. Then you can set shutter speed and aperture manually, and use exposure compensation to bias the ISO the camera chooses. But for direct manual ISO changes with viewfinder feedback, the intended D300S method is the dedicated ISO button plus command dial.
