I’d like to make only part of a photo transparent directly in Lightroom, instead of sending it to Photoshop. Is there any way to do transparency in Lightroom itself?

Unfortunately, this is not possible in Lightroom. You can apply selective edits (such as contrast, exposure etc.) with the adjustment brush or gradient tools, but working with layers, compositing or pixel level adjustment require software such as Photoshop or Gimp.

No. Lightroom does not support true transparency editing, layers, or pixel-level compositing. You can make local adjustments with tools like the Adjustment Brush, Radial Filter, or Graduated Filter, but those only change things like exposure, contrast, and color—they do not create transparent areas.

If you need part of an image to be transparent, you’ll need an editor that supports layers and transparency, such as Photoshop or GIMP. A common workflow is to do your global/raw edits in Lightroom, then use Photo > Edit In to finish transparency or compositing work in Photoshop.
