Can Lightroom keep Grid view from re-sorting while I change star ratings?

In Lightroom Grid view, I’ve sorted a set of photos by rating and want to go through them to adjust those ratings. The problem is that each time I change a photo’s rating, Lightroom immediately re-sorts the grid and jumps the photo to its new position, which interrupts the review process. Is there a way to keep the current display order fixed until I’m finished re-rating?

You can "lock" the order by making a Custom Sort order. Once you have sorted the images you want using the rating, moving a thumbnail to an other place should enable the Custom Sort order. It's used here for renaming and an example is given there. You can also select it directly in the toolbar (you can see in the example I already have sorted the photos by ratings) :
Another way to do it is to use a collection : Add to the Quick collection (might work with a "regular collection" but not tested) the photos you want, sort them by ratings, and then add to photos to a new empty "regular" collection (see here).

Yes. Lightroom will re-sort immediately if the current sort order is set to Rating, so to keep the thumbnails from moving you need to switch to a fixed order instead of an automatic rating sort.
A common way is to use Custom Sort. Once the images are in the order you want, drag a thumbnail to create or enable a custom order, then choose Custom Sort in the toolbar. After that, changing ratings won’t cause the grid to reshuffle the way a live Rating sort does.
Another workaround is to place the images in a collection. For example, add the photos to the Quick Collection, sort or organize them there, then copy them into a regular collection and work from that collection in a fixed order.
So the short answer is: Lightroom doesn’t “pause” a Rating sort, but you can avoid the jumping by working in Custom Sort or in a collection with a manually controlled order.
