I'm upgrading from a Sony A200 to a used Sony A580 and want to know whether I need a new battery charger. Both cameras appear to use the same battery type. Can I keep using my A200 charger and batteries with the A580?

According to the specifications both cameras use the same battery: NP-FM500H. So you can continue to use old batteries and charger.

Yes. Both the Sony A200 and Sony A580 use the NP-FM500H battery, so your existing A200 charger should work with the A580, and your current batteries should be compatible as well.
