Can I try Adobe Photoshop before buying, and are there free alternatives to learn on?

I’m new to Photoshop and found learning materials for Photoshop CS6, but I’m confused about Adobe’s licensing options. I’ve seen references to different plans and also mentions of needing an older version, which I don’t have. Is there a way to try Photoshop before purchasing it? If I don’t want to buy it yet, is there a legal free alternative I can use to practice similar editing skills?

You can have a 30 day free trial at which point you can purchase a license or discontinue use.

That being said, you could also try GIMP as suggested by @Count Ilblis.

Yes. Based on the community answer, Adobe offers a 30-day free trial, so you can install Photoshop, learn the basics, and decide whether to continue or buy a license afterward.

If you don’t want to pay right away, you should not look for Photoshop “without a license” beyond the official trial. Instead, a free alternative is GIMP, which can help you practice many common image-editing concepts legally.

So your practical options are:

  • use the official 30-day Photoshop trial
  • buy a license if you want to keep using Photoshop after the trial
  • use GIMP as a free alternative for learning and practice

Older-version upgrade requirements only matter for specific upgrade licensing paths; if you don’t own a previous version, you would use a standard trial or full license instead.
