Can Apple Image Capture scan at more than 8-bit color depth?

I’m using an HP Deskjet 3054 with Apple’s Image Capture on macOS. My scans open in Photoshop as 8-bit images, and I’d like to know whether Image Capture can scan at a higher bit depth. If not, is there a free alternative that might support higher-bit scanning with this scanner?

An option to do what you want with Apple's Image Capture does not appear to exist. See Mac Basics: Using a scanner.
If available, you can try software provided by the scanner manufacturer.
You may be able to use TWAIN SANE if your scanner is supported.

Apple’s Image Capture does not appear to offer a setting for higher-than-8-bit scanning on its own. If your scans are coming into Photoshop as 8-bit, that is likely a limitation of the software workflow you’re using in Image Capture.
Your main alternatives are:
- Use scanning software from HP, if the manufacturer provides it for your model and macOS version.
- Try TWAIN SANE, but only if your scanner is supported.
If neither supports your scanner or higher bit-depth capture, then Image Capture alone is unlikely to solve it. In general, whether you can scan at 16-bit or higher depends on both the scanner hardware and the driver/software used to access it.
