On a Canon EOS 450D, Live View turns off quite quickly to save battery. Is there a setting to make the display stay on longer while shooting in Live View?

Jukka is correct, you can solve the problem by changing "auto power off" in the 450D settings menu (first yellow spanner icon).
The only thing I have to add is that even when auto power off is disabled, live view will still stop after 30 minutes to avoid overheating the sensor.

Yes. On the Canon EOS 450D, the setting to change is Auto Power Off in the camera menu (the first yellow wrench/spanner tab). Increasing that time, or disabling Auto Power Off, will let Live View stay active longer.
However, even with Auto Power Off disabled, Live View will still shut off after about 30 minutes. That limit is built in to help prevent the sensor from overheating.
