Can a Nikon firmware update break autofocus on Sigma lenses?

I updated the firmware on my Nikon D5300, and afterward the autofocus on my Sigma lens stopped working. Is this a known compatibility issue with Sigma lenses after Nikon camera firmware updates? If so, what are the usual fixes?

Firmware updates for camera bodies (Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony, and others) sometimes disrupt compatibility with 3rd party lenses. Sigma is likely to produce a firmware update for recent lenses. Older lenses are less likely to have an update available.

You may use the Sigma USB Dock to apply firmware updates if your lens is part of the Global Vision Series (Art, Sports, or Contemporary). If your lens is not compatible with the USB Dock, it may be updated by an authorized Sigma Service Center. Sigma often makes such updates for recent models available at no charge, but the owner of the lens is responsible for the shipping costs.

Yes. Camera firmware updates can sometimes change compatibility with third-party lenses, including Sigma, so autofocus problems after a Nikon update are a known possibility.

Typical fixes are:

  • Update the lens firmware if Sigma provides one.
  • If the lens is a Sigma Global Vision model (Art, Sports, or Contemporary), you may be able to update it yourself with the Sigma USB Dock.
  • If it is not USB Dock compatible, Sigma service may be able to update it.
  • Older Sigma lenses are less likely to receive updates.

Some users report that reverting the camera firmware restored autofocus, but downgrading camera firmware is not generally straightforward and may not be officially supported.

A practical takeaway is to check lens compatibility before installing camera firmware updates, especially when using third-party lenses.
