Why won’t my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM autofocus on a Nikon D5300?

My Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM will not autofocus on my Nikon D5300, even though the lens has a built-in HSM motor. I’ve checked the camera’s AF settings and tried different autofocus modes, but the lens still won’t focus. There is also no M/A switch on the lens. Is this a settings issue, or is there a known compatibility problem between this Sigma lens and the D5300?

Sigma issued an advisory about compatibility with the D5300 in late 2013. They have released firmware updates for lenses that can be upgraded via their USB dock.

Unfortunately, the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is not one of the compatible lenses listed for the USB dock. It appears your lens may not be compatible with the Nikon D5300. Because you can't update the lens using the USB dock, you will have to contact Sigma to have the lens updated. From the advisory,

You can contact your nearest authorized Sigma distributor for the firmware update. From the link below, you can see where to contact in our world network. http://www.sigma-photo.co.jp/english/network/index.html

This is likely a compatibility/firmware issue rather than a camera setting mistake. Sigma published advisories for some Nikon-body compatibility problems, and older Sigma HSM lenses can fail to autofocus properly on certain Nikon D5xxx bodies, including the D5300.

Your specific 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM model is not one of the lenses that can be user-updated with Sigma’s USB dock, so the usual fix is to contact Sigma or an authorized Sigma service center for a firmware update.

One community answer also reports that some newer Nikon D5300 firmware versions can cause communication problems with older Sigma HSM lenses, while earlier camera firmware may work better. However, the most reliable path is still to confirm compatibility with Sigma and ask whether your lens can be rechipped or updated for the D5300.

So: you’re probably not doing anything wrong—the lens likely needs a Sigma service update to autofocus correctly on that camera.
