Generally, no—Nikon DSLRs use sequential filenames and don’t usually create date-based folders or filenames in-camera. The camera does store the capture date in each file’s metadata, though, so if the camera’s date/time is set correctly, your computer and photo software can use that information.

The usual solution is to organize files during import on your computer. Photo-ingest apps such as Adobe Lightroom or Photo Mechanic can rename files and place them into folders by date automatically. Some users also use computer automation tools to sort imported files into a Year/Month/Day folder structure.

So if your goal is easier browsing by shooting date, the best workflow is:

1. Make sure the camera clock is correct.
2. Import from the card with software that can sort by capture date.
3. Let that software create dated folders on your computer.

If you don’t use import software, you can still sort by the file date columns on your computer and manually move each day’s shoot into its own folder.
