Can a 128GB SDXC card be reformatted to work in an SDHC-only camera?

My Kodak PIXPRO SP360 only lists support for SDHC cards. I have a 128GB SDXC card and wondered whether I could repartition or reformat it to 32GB/FAT32 so the camera would recognize it. Is that possible, or are SDHC and SDXC differences beyond just the filesystem and partition size?

SDHC and SDXC are descriptions of the card formats (Secure Digital High Capacity and eXtended Capacity). SDHC only supports cards of less than 32GB, while SDXC supports cards with more than 32GB. If your camera does not support SDXC, nothing you do to the card will make it work properly. The camera might see the 128GB card as a 32GB card, but the odds of failure or image corruption are high. I suspect you are out of luck with the PixPro 360, as it only states support for SDHC.

Probably not. SDHC and SDXC are different card standards, not just different partition sizes or filesystems. In general, SDHC covers 4GB to 32GB cards, while SDXC is for capacities above 32GB.

Although SDXC cards are commonly formatted as exFAT and SDHC cards as FAT32, the compatibility issue is not solved simply by repartitioning or reformatting. A camera that only supports SDHC is typically not designed to work reliably with SDXC media at all.

At best, the camera might fail to detect the card; at worst, it could appear to work but cause write errors or image corruption. So even if you create a 32GB FAT32 partition, it’s not something you should rely on.

The practical answer is to use a true SDHC card (32GB or smaller) that matches the camera’s stated compatibility.
