Built-in pop-up flash won’t open after it was blocked — what should I do?

While shooting, my hat/cap blocked the camera’s built-in pop-up flash as it tried to open. Since then, the flash no longer pops up. Is there anything I can check myself, or does this usually mean the pop-up mechanism has been damaged?

Two possibilities:

  1. There is physical damage to the flash pop-up mechanism (such as a spring popped out), and you should take it to a camera store.

  2. You have switched to a different mode where the flash won't pop-up automatically, or your flash is on "auto" and the camera doesn't think it needs flash. It will usually pop up automatically if the flash is in "auto" mode, or the camera is in "full auto" mode, and the camera thinks it needs flash.

First, make sure it isn’t just a camera setting issue. On many cameras, the built-in flash only pops up automatically in certain modes, or when flash is enabled and the camera decides more light is needed. Try a full auto mode or use the flash pop-up button if your camera has one.

If it still won’t open after being physically blocked, the pop-up mechanism was likely damaged or the spring was displaced. In that case, the proper fix is service or repair at a camera shop or authorized service center.

You may be able to press the flash-release button and gently lift it manually as a temporary workaround, but don’t force it. If it won’t stay in place or doesn’t operate normally, stop using it and have it repaired to avoid further damage.
