The Canon AE-1 is the first microprocessor-equipped SLR camera that offers shutter priority exposure control. This SLR can fit Canon FD mount lenses. The camera employs the center-weighted TTL metering with a silicon photocell. It provides an adjustable ISO range of ASA 25 to 3200. You can boost the shutter speed up to 1/1000th of a second for capturing crisp photographs of moving objects. You can stopped-down the equipped lens with the dedicated lever. A hot shoe contact is incorporated into the design for mounting an electronic flash unit or flashbulb. The Canon AE-1 also comes with other notable features such as exposure compensation, self-timer, and battery check.

Focus and Optics

The camera has a silicon photocell powered center-weighted TTL exposure metering. You can select the shutter-priority mode that adjusts the ISO and lens aperture according to the shutter speed. The AE lock prevents overexposure created due to the bright background or foreground light. You can speed-up the shutter up to of 1/1000th of a second to capture clear shots of objects in motion.

Sensor and Screen

The Canon AE-1 SLR has a fixed eye-level pentaprism viewfinder that offers a bright view of the scene. It covers 93.5% and 96% of the frame area on the vertical and horizontal axis respectively. You can see the camera setting for the aperture, exposure meter, and a stopped-down metering index in the viewfinder.

Image and Video

This SLR camera uses 35mm film rolls to take pictures. The ISO speed can be set from ASA 25 to 3200. Use the single-stroke advance lever, which has a 120° throw and a 30° stand-off angle, to wind the film. The self-additive frame counter denotes the number of exposed frames. It resets to the initial count when the camera back is opened.

Other Features

The camera has a hot shoe that can be used to mount an electronic flash or flashbulb. After attaching the electronic flash, it can be synchronized with the shutter at up to 1/60th of a second while the flashbulb can be synchronized at 1/15th of a second. The self-timer function makes you delay the shutter release for 10 seconds. To cancel the self-timer, depress the battery check button. The Canon AE-1 uses a single 6V silver oxide battery to power its electronic metering mechanism.
