New York City photography: A Never Ending Joy

The city of New York is one of those rare, one-of-a-kind places that lend themselves easily to a photographer’s fancy. Here, you come across people from every corner of the world, carelessly ambling around in the streets. To provide the background, there is everything, from sleek, modern skyscrapers to buildings cast in the olden style of architecture, landmarks scattered all over, and curious surprises waiting to be discovered around every corner. Well, we are aware of all this through New York City pictures anyway. To a photographer, it is a dreamy landscape: Inexhaustible in variety, and growing each day like a living creature.

Manhattan is perhaps the most ‘viewed’ vicinity in the world, and also the most photographed vicinity. No wonder then that almost every photographer of note keeps his/her own portfolio of New York City pictures. Also, it is granted that one trip to New York is just not enough to see and photograph everything, but within those constraints, photographers must not get carried away. New York City photography is not just about clicking pictures of people idling near hotspots. Of course, it’s all very well to visit the major landmarks, like the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and others. One must do all that, but do realize that there is more to the city of New York. From a photographer’s point of view, the real treasure of subjects is in the unused subways, the odd corners, as well as the colorful streets and by-lanes.

More specifically, SoHo, Manhattan is a great place for street photography, with a lot of interesting people always up to something. Prince and Broadway are two very happening corners that are not very far from Chinatown, home to the Chinese diaspora and a stirring locality, just the stuff you need to do street photography. Now, we come to Bowery Street, which goes straight through the middle of Chinatown, and is known for its bank building, old CBGBs, and splendid murals. It is also one of those fashionable areas of town, and a must-not-be-missed kind of place for a photographer.

No photographer can ever get enough of the New York Subway System. Known as the mecca of street photography, you can use same camera settings to trace the subway, clicking pictures at a rapid pace. The place is almost always brimming with people and any time of the day is good time. Needless to say photographing New York Subway is always a joy.

We haven’t even begun to scratch the surface. New York offers such a multitude of interesting people and places that we, without stepping out in the street, can’t really say what it will be like on a particular day in New York. So we just implore every photographer out there to bring the unknown of this city to us in a photograph. Check out our other blogs to get any photography-related advice.
