Kickstarter: Awesome Quick-Change Lens Holster

"Buy a superzoom lens. Buy a medium-zoom lens and bring a second body. Shoot only prime." These are all bits of advice I've received in the past regarding what to bring with me for a shoot. To be honest, they're all wrong for me. I like to carry a single camera body and unobtrusively carry one or two other lenses with me. There's always been the issue, however, of fumbling around in the camera bag for the other lens that I need. Sometimes this goes off without a hitch, sometimes I clumsily send my 50mm bouncing down a footbridge nearly falling into a river. Well, provided this Kickstarter project happens, I think I've solved at least one of those issues; I'll still be buffoonish, but my lenses may be a bit safer.

The Lens Holster worn around the waist

It's called, quite aptly, the Lens Holster. Rather than a zip-pouch that can attach to some camera straps (and belts), this handy little device has two lens mounts (specific to Nikon, and soon, Canon), that work just like your camera body. Need to swap? Just press the locking button and twist the lens off, much like you'd do with your camera. Not only does this eliminate the need for a rear lens cap, it keeps the lens secured by your side with the least possible chance of unintentional droppage. Preston Turk, the designer of the campaign, suggests that only one spare lens be carried, in order to cut down on the time of the lens swap. Having three lenses certainly seems doable, however, with only a few extra seconds to change the lens around.

The only caveat, as I can tell, is that the lens holster cannot be swapped vertically, so your lenses will be sticking out horizontally and will be prone to getting knocked around a bit. This really won't be a constant problem, however, so long as you're careful with your movement and keep the front lens caps on. There's no word on whether or not the holster will come with locking brackets to reduce movement, as a lot of the BlackRapid straps do, but the design itself looks fairly resistant to inertia.

Care to make this campaign a reality and get one of these holsters for yourself? Head over to the Kickstarter page and consider your options.
