Nikon has been a ruler of the camera-manufacturing sector all over the world since decades. Known for constantly kicking up stirs by releasing its innovative products now and then, Nikon has done it again. This time, the Nikon Corporation is hogging the limelight for all the right reasons. The latest release is what can be called the best mirrorless camera that is priced at under $500 in the open market, which is incredibly cheap, considering that it has a flawless 4K video-recording capacity.
The new Nikon 1 J5 is grabbing eyeballs because it is the first mirrorless camera that is capable of delivering the highest quality of 4K video recording. For those who do not understand technical photography jargon used in DSLR and camera-review articles, the significance of Nikon’s making of this kind of a mirrorless camera is discussed here.
Nikon’s sales are highest in its entry-level and high-end DSLR categories, but innovation in the Corporation doesn’t stop there. The latest mirrorless Nikon 1 J5 camera from the Nikon 1 J series is packed with groundbreaking features that make one wonder how it can be priced at a low, competitive price. The J5 has a series of firsts in its long list of specifications, which we shall discuss.
The Nikon 1 J5 is the first mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses that has a Backside-Illuminated (BSI) sensor, which enhances its performance in low-light photography to deliver the best of its capacity. The BSI sensor has contrast-detection capacities, as well as DSLR-like phase-detection technology that are expected to make it the quickest camera in the Nikon 1 J series.
It is also the first Nikon mirrorless camera to have the capacity to shoot 4K videos, although it can only do so at a leisurely 15 fps. It can record 1080p videos at 30/60 fps, but it also has the option to allow users to go up to 120 fps on 720p. Its super-powerful 20.8-megapixel resolution and EXPEED 5A image processor deliver clarity that is beyond compare in cameras within this price bracket. This camera also has an ISO range of 1,600 to 12,800, which further adds to the quality of images it delivers.

The Nikon 1 J5 can capture up to 20 full-resolution fps without autofocus for each image, or up to 60 fps, if autofocus is locked at the beginning of burst-mode photography. This is the fastest continuous shooting speed in the world. The shutter delay, or the time gap between the moment the shutter-release button is pressed and the moment the shot is captured, is expected to be almost entirely non-existent on the Nikon 1 J5 mirrorless camera. This means that images will be captured almost in the same instant as the shutter button is pressed.
The J5 features seven new ‘Creative’ modes, ranging from high-contrast monochrome and nostalgic sepia to HDR, selective color, fisheye, and more. The ‘Glamour’ mode is meant to enhance faces to make people look ‘more attractive’, while the ‘Self-Shooting’ mode features a skin-softening effect that is seen in many smartphones. Its special Sports mode optimizes auto focus for split-second shooting. The latest Nikon 1 J5 is the best mirrorless camera with inbuilt slow-motion movie options, which can capture up to 999 full-resolution pictures. You can then manually combine these to create your time-lapse videos on the camera itself. If that sounds like too much effort, the camera also provides you with the option of setting the interval timer and letting the camera create a time-lapse video on its own. The J5 is also the first Nikon mirrorless camera to feature Nikon’s active D-Lighting for videos. This improves the dynamic highlight and shadow details even in videos. The J5 also serves as the perfect selfie camera, with a 3-inch LCD touchscreen that can flip up to 180° vertically.
The Nikon 1 J5 has its own Wi-Fi, which makes it easy to connect the camera remotely and wirelessly to devices like phones and tablets, irrespective of the operating system compatibility. This means that the camera can connect with Android, as well as iOS devices. It even features an NFC (Near Field Communication) function to connect with NFC-equipped smart devices in proximity. To add to it all, the Nikon Wireless Mobile Utility app allows you to control the camera remotely with ease.
