Hey $^&*@#! Get a Flip!

Yesterday Cisco announced that it would be shutting down its video camera division.  So what does that mean? Who knew Cisco made video cameras?  Well a couple years ago Cisco foolishly purchased the "Flip" HD Video camera brand for a cool $590 million.  Now it's all over!  So what caused the downfall of the seemingly popular hand-held HD video camera? We can blame the demise of the Flip Video Camera on the introduction of HD Video into several devices.  Most DSLR cameras, even the most basic ones feature HD video options now.  The same can be said of many (not all) point and shoot cameras, which are struggling to survive in their own right.  However the biggest factor here are "Smart" Phones.  Phones such as the Apple iPhone 4 and Motorolla Droid-X feature HD video recording.  Now while this won't replace your camera for even semi-serious video work, it is plenty good enough for most people out there making incredulous videos of their trips to the bar.  So what do you think?  How long do Point and Shoot cameras have left before they go the wayside as well?  Was the Flip Video camera ever popular (I never had an interest in buying one) or was it just heavily advertised and marketed?   Oh and if you're wondering about the title of this post... Check this video out.  Nowadays the Flip Video Camera is about as practical as "Glow Bones"  And for those Adult Swim/Tim & Eric fans out there, we really have to wonder if CISCO deserves to be called CINCO for throwing away $590 mil.
