Big aperture portrait lenses are one of the crucial features in a lens system. Until recently, mirrorless camera manufacturers did not offer enough variety in this respect. Fujifilm has finally launched the new Fujinon XF 56 mm f/1.2 R. Currently, this is the fastest Fuji lens available at an affordable price, and has the best reviews. Interestingly, the lens does not feature the focus clutch mechanism that is present in the previous Fujinon XF series. However, the focus ring operates smoothly, and the lens has a superb build quality with a metal body based on the mount. The lens hood, which is made of plastic, is a part of the package, and can withstand the daily wear and tear. Let's look at some of the interesting dimensions and features of the Fujinon lens.k at some of the interesting dimensions and features of the Fujinon lens.
Distortion and Vignetting
The produced distortion of the Fujinon is marginal at just under 0.2%. This applies to the auto-corrected images, as well as the uncorrected RAW files. On the other hand, the vignetting in the RAW files is heavy at f/1.2, but it does not hamper the picture quality. Interestingly, in auto-corrected JPEG mode, the camera digitally corrects the vignetting down to 0.9 EV at max.
Resolution and Chromatic Aberrations
The Fujinon XF 56 mm f/1.2 R exhibits similar resolution characteristics in the Fujifilm range of the Fujinon XF 23 mm f/1.4 R. At an aperture of f/1.2, the lens is capable of delivering excellent center performance that is consolidated with perfect albeit and no stellar corners. The extreme corners are slightly better than the borders for producing an impressive image. The lateral chromatic aberrations that include color shadows at hard-contrast transitions are already quite low, with an average pixel width of 0.6 px and image borders at f/1.2. You should avoid apertures smaller than f/11 to diminish the effect of diffraction.
Bokeh and Bokeh Fringing
The visual appearance of the out-of-focus areas in a picture, especially as rendered by a particular lens, is known as the bokeh effect. Capturing some beautiful pictures with a striking bokeh effect can create some considerable impact on the image quality. One of the crucial aspects of an ultra-large aperture lens is the quality of bokeh it produces, and the Fujinon does not disappoint. The general out-of-focus blur is smooth and stable, both in front of the focus point and beyond. The evenly rendered out-of-focus highlights work best at f/1.2. On the other hand, bokeh fringing is a fundamental color fringing effect. It can show up as blue halos in front of the focus point, and green halos in the background. With a creative edge to it, photographers can use this effect to complement their skill for extra impressions.
Fujinon XF 56mm combines an ultra-large aperture with premium quality results. The rendering of the bokeh is impressive along with the smooth blur and excellent out-of-focus highlights. The ultra-fast Fuji lens is perfect for street or portrait photography.
