For most, going to prison isn't exactly an experience worth bragging about...Nor is it a situation one would put themselves in. Eastern State Penitentiary isn't just any old prison. At the time of its completion, Eastern State was the largest and most expensive public structure ever made, and it's wheel-shaped design would serve as a model for 300 other prisons worldwide. This prison also has history thanks to its previous guests...known for housing many a famous criminal such as Willie Sutton and Al Capone. The prison ceased operation in 1971 and became a national landmark, allowing visitors to explore the prison in all its deteriorated glory. This means it's basically a photographer's playground. Add the word "abandoned" next to something and surely many photographer ears will perk up.
I had the chance to tag along for the Eastern State Excursion held by Unique University this year and it surely held up to the hype. Unique University instructor Rick Gerrity gives a lecture the night prior to getting locked up, showing you how to do long exposures and different lighting techniques. The next day you get to test out your chops on the decaying walls of this historic prison. The texture of the walls alone are enough to justify a trip over there. I had a blast exploring the place and would definitely recommend it to those who enjoy shooting in an eerie aesthetic. Pretty appropriate for the time of year! If you missed out make sure you catch it next time around! Here are some shots that I took from the trip:
might have caught something spooky in this last one...
Thanks to the great group who attended this year!
