Halloween is the best. There, I said it. While the sentiment isn't shared by grumpy, fun-hating curmudgeons, there are so many things to enjoy about this time of year: The perfect weather, the foliage, festive decorating, great food, scary movies, pumpkin carving, going into diabetic shock from eating too much candy and of course dressing up in spooky costumes. We creative folk might put a little too much effort into our costumes, but why do we dress up like ghouls in the first place? You can thank the ancient Celtics who thought that lighting bonfires and wearing ghastly costumes would ward off lost souls roaming through the night. Of course costumes back then were meant to scare the scary...In comparison to their standards, our modern costumes are as terrifying as a box of kittens. No, Halloween costumes of yore weren't mass produced...One would have to get very crafty in order to celebrate this strange holiday. In the same way your aunt's handmade sweaters are a real fright, these handmade costumes were downright horrific.
