Learn how to optimize your camera settings to capture birds in flight and how to use the evening light to create stunning backdrops. Expect to photograph a diverse range of species, including hawks, falcons, eagles, terns, egrets, herons, skimmers, warblers and more. Sony loaner cameras and lenses will be available!

MELISSA GROO
is a wildlife photographer, writer, and conservationist. She’s a Sony Artisan of Imagery and an Associate Fellow with the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP). As advisor to the National Audubon Society on photography content and ethics, she’s helped them develop a section of their web site addressing bird photography tips and techniques, and ethical guidelines, beginning with the co-authoring of Audubon’s landmark Guide to Ethical Bird Photography and Filmmaking.

Melissa’s strong stance on ethics in wildlife photography has led her on a journey covered in a feature story in Rolling Stone magazine last year: "The Ugly Truth About the Wild Animals of Instagram".

Melissa’s photographs and articles have been published in numerous magazines including SmithsonianAudubonOutdoor PhotographerNational Wildlife, National Geographic (online), Living Bird, and Natural History. She travels frequently as an assignment photographer for Audubon and Smithsonian magazines, and to lead tours for Summit Photography Workshops.

In 2020, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology released a masterclass course on beginning bird photography, taught by Melissa. “Bird Photography with Melissa Groo” is comprised of nearly 40 instructional videos on the subject.
