Will the Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD work on a Canon T3i?

I’m considering the Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD for a Canon EOS Rebel T3i and saw a compatibility warning online. Will this lens fit and function on the T3i, and does the “Di” designation affect compatibility with the camera’s APS-C sensor?

If you can get it with a Canon EF mount, then yes.

(or EF-S, but as far as I know only Canon actually make EF-S lenses; even the 3rd-party lenses designed for crop sensors usually still have an EF mount).

Yes — if you buy the Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD in Canon EF mount, it will work on a Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

The T3i uses Canon’s APS-C sensor and accepts both EF and EF-S compatible lenses. Tamron’s “Di” designation indicates a lens designed to cover a full-frame image circle, which also means it can be used on APS-C bodies like the T3i.

So the key point is mount, not the “Di” label: make sure the lens version is made for Canon EF.

On the T3i, the lens will have a narrower field of view than it would on a full-frame camera because of the APS-C crop factor, but that does not mean it is incompatible. It will still mount and function normally.
