I’m considering the Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro for Nikon and want to know whether autofocus will work on a Nikon D5500. I understand the D5500 does not have an in-body focus motor, so does AF depend on which version of this Tamron lens I have?

Yes it will. The D5500 does not have an autofocus (AF) motor in the body, so only lenses which have AF motors built-in will autofocus on that camera body. But the Tamron AF 70-300mm does have an AF motor, so it will autofocus on the D5500.

Yes—if you have the Tamron 70-300mm version with a built-in focus motor, it will autofocus on the Nikon D5500. The D5500 does not have an in-body AF motor, so it can only autofocus with lenses that include their own motor.

For this Tamron lens, compatibility depends on the specific model:

  • A17NII: has a built-in motor, so autofocus works on the D5500.
  • Older A17N: no built-in motor, so on the D5500 it will be manual focus only.

So the key is to confirm which version of the lens you have before buying.
