Will a standard hot-shoe sync adapter work on the Canon EOS R10 multifunction shoe?

I used an older hot-shoe sync adapter on a Canon 400D to fire Nikon SB-24/SB-25 flashes by cable. On my Canon EOS R10, the flashes do not trigger. I have already disabled silent shutter and tried both mechanical and electronic first-curtain shutter modes.
Is the EOS R10’s multifunction shoe compatible with a standard center-pin sync adapter, or could the newer shoe shape prevent proper contact? If this adapter is not compatible, is there another way to use older manual flashes like the SB-24 and SB-25 with the R10?

I would check that your adapter seats properly in the new multifunction hotshoe so that the sync pin on the bottom is actually touching the sync contact (the big one in the center of the "square". The new physical shape of the multifunction hotshoe with additional electronic contacts in the back may not be compatible with the adapter you have.
As far as I know, the new multi-function hotshoe on the R10 should be compatible with any flash gear that worked on the older traditional Canon hotshoe of your 400D, but this is still new territory as the multi-function hotshoe only came out in 2021 on the R3, and folks only really got their hands on multifunction hotshoes starting in 2022 and 2023 bodies (R7, R10, R8, R6ii).
I would also check that you know the following things are good and work:
- Flash (test button)
- Batteries in flash (test cycle on a smart charger)
- Cable (swap cables)
- Adapter (try on another camera; or possibly tape over the small four non-sync contacts on the hotshoe and mount the flash directly on the hotshoe.
- That the R10's flash setting isn't turned off.
- That the R10's pop-up flash is not engaged and the hotshoe's microswitch is not broken or stuck.

Yes, in principle the EOS R10’s multifunction shoe should still work with simple center-pin flash gear that worked on older Canon hot shoes. The most likely issue is physical fit: your older sync adapter may not be seating correctly in the R10’s multifunction shoe, so its center contact is not actually touching the camera’s center sync contact.
Since you already disabled silent shutter and tried mechanical / electronic first-curtain modes, check these basics:
- make sure the adapter is fully seated and locked
- confirm the center pin/contact is making contact
- verify the adapter, cable, and flashes still work on another camera or with a simple sync test
If the adapter’s shape is incompatible with the newer multifunction shoe, your old flashes may still be usable with the R10 by using a different triggering method, such as a compatible adapter or another manual trigger solution that relies on the center sync contact.
So: the R10 should support firing simple manual flashes, but your specific adapter may not physically interface correctly with the multifunction shoe.
