Why won’t this SMC 85mm f/2.2 mount on my Pentax ME Super if it’s listed as K-mount?

I bought an SMC 85mm f/2.2 expecting to use it on my Pentax ME Super, since both were described as Pentax K-mount. However, the lens will not attach to the camera at all. The mount shows some wear, but not enough to explain why it won’t fit. From the mount shape and locking features, is this actually a different mount or a modified lens?

I'm pretty sure it's not Pentax K (PK) mount. It might be Nikon F (NF) mount.

  • All of the control and communication linkages are missing, but the page you link seems to indicate this is normal for that lens.
  • The alignment dot has the same position as NF.
  • The locking slots are located between the flanges, like NF. The slot would adjacent to one of the flanges on PK.
  • The position of the stop screw indicates the lens rotates counterclockwise to lock on a camera, like NF. PK rotates clockwise to lock.

Here are some images of the mounts for reference. The features noted above should be visible.

It likely isn’t a Pentax K-mount lens at all. Based on the mount details described, it appears to be Nikon F mount rather than Pentax K.

The key clues are:

  • the alignment dot position matches Nikon F,
  • the locking slot placement matches Nikon F,
  • the stop screw suggests the lens twists counterclockwise to lock, which is Nikon F behavior,
  • Pentax K lenses lock in the opposite direction and have different slot/linkage placement.

So the issue is probably not scratches or minor damage — it’s that the lens has been mislabeled, is in a different mount, or may have been modified/conversion-mounted. That’s why it won’t mount on your Pentax ME Super.

Before forcing anything, compare the rear mount to confirmed Nikon F and Pentax K reference photos. If it is Nikon F, it will not directly mount on your ME Super as a normal K-mount lens.
