Why won’t the SD card latch in my Panasonic Lumix GX80/GX85?

My Panasonic Lumix GX80/GX85 is just over a year old. The SD card no longer clicks or latches into place, although the card door will hold it well enough for the camera to work. I’ve checked the slot for obvious obstructions and tried multiple SD cards. What could cause this, and is there anything I can check before sending it for repair?

Some months later ...

I recently tried one of my older SD cards in the camera, and it clicked in!

On closer inspection I've noticed that a tiny fragment of the SD card is broken!

This presumably is jammed somewhere in the SD card slot and prevents any "unbroken" SD cards from clicking into place.

Now to practice some gynecological skills to see if I can locate and remove the broken piece.
It would be helpful if i could actually see it!

A likely cause is a small broken fragment from an SD card lodged in the slot, blocking the spring-latch mechanism. In the reported case, an older damaged card would click in, and closer inspection showed a tiny piece had broken off the card and was presumably stuck inside the slot.

If multiple normal SD cards won’t latch, the problem is probably not the cards themselves but an obstruction or damage in the slot. Carefully inspect the card and slot in good light. If you suspect debris or a broken plastic piece inside, avoid forcing cards in, as that can damage the contacts or latch.

If you can’t clearly see and safely remove the obstruction, it’s best treated as a repair job. The camera may still function if the door holds the card in place, but that’s only a temporary workaround.
