Why won’t Nikon NX Studio open my D4 NEF files?

I’ve been using Capture NX2 and recently installed Nikon NX Studio. I expected it to open my Nikon D4 NEF raw files, but I only seem to see support for NCP, NP2, and NP3 files. Those appear to be picture control files rather than image files. How do I open NEF files in NX Studio, and is there any file extension setting I need to change?

NX Studio does support Nikon D4 NEF files. The NCP, NP2, and NP3 files you’re seeing are picture control profile formats, not photo image formats.
Most likely, either:
- you’re looking in the wrong part of the program, or
- you installed/opened Nikon’s Picture Control Utility instead of NX Studio.
In NX Studio, use the folder/location tree on the left and navigate to the folder containing your NEF files. They should open there without adding any file-extension support.
If you’re trying to open a NEF by double-clicking it in Windows, set NX Studio as the app to open that file type:
- Right-click the NEF file
- Choose “Open with”
- Select NX Studio, or browse to its install folder if it isn’t listed
So, no extension registry change is needed. Just make sure you’re actually using NX Studio and browsing to the folder with your NEF images.
