Why won’t my Canon .CR2 photos upload to Facebook or open as normal images?

I copied photos from my Canon Rebel SL1 to my computer, but the files have the .CR2 extension instead of .jpg. Facebook doesn’t recognize them as normal image files, uploads don’t finish, and people I email them to often can’t view them. What are .CR2 files, and how can I make my photos usable for sharing online or by email?

'CR2' is the file extension for 'Raw' images from Canon. They cannot be uploaded as an image to facebook. Raw files are helpful to edit. If you want to distribute your taken picture, you must first convert them to jpg or another image format.

Canon .CR2 files are RAW photos, not standard shareable image files like JPEG. RAW files contain the camera’s original sensor data and usually need special software to view or convert.

That’s why Facebook and many email recipients won’t handle them properly. To share them, convert the .CR2 files to JPEG (or PNG) first using Canon’s software or another program that supports Canon RAW files.

To avoid this in the future, check your camera’s image quality settings. You can usually set it to:

  • JPEG only: easiest for sharing
  • RAW + JPEG: keeps a RAW file for editing and a JPEG for posting/email
  • RAW only: best if you plan to edit, but not convenient for direct sharing

If you don’t use RAW editing, JPEG only is usually the simplest choice and also saves card space because JPEG files are smaller than RAW files.
