Why won't Adobe Bridge CS6 open images in Camera Raw?

I'm using Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS6. When I select an image in Bridge and choose the Camera Raw icon or File > Open in Camera Raw, I get this message: "Bridge's parent application is not active. Bridge requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature." Photoshop can already be open, but I still see the same error. The only way I can open a file in Camera Raw is from Photoshop by using File > Open and selecting the image there. What causes this, and how can I fix it?

If you're on Creative Cloud, just update everything.

If your version of PS doesn't match CS6 it could be a compatibility issue. You may also need to update your Adobe Raw compatibility too but I doubt it if you can see the Raw files in finder.

This usually points to an Adobe version/activation mismatch rather than a problem with the photo file itself.

Bridge needs a qualifying parent app, such as Photoshop, to be properly installed and launched/activated at least once before Bridge can hand files off to Camera Raw. If Bridge and Photoshop are not matching versions, that can trigger this error.

What to check:

  • Make sure Bridge and Photoshop are both from the same suite/version family (for example, both CS6).
  • Launch Photoshop directly and confirm it has completed first-run setup/activation.
  • Update Adobe components, especially Camera Raw, and if you're using Creative Cloud, update all Adobe apps.

Since Camera Raw opens when you start from Photoshop, the Camera Raw plug-in itself is likely installed and working. The problem is more likely Bridge-to-Photoshop integration or version compatibility.
