Why won’t a Yongnuo RF-603N II trigger from a Nikon D5100 hot shoe?

I’m using a Nikon D5100 with a Yongnuo RF-603N II to trigger a Yongnuo YN560 III off-camera. The flash fires normally when mounted directly on the camera. However, when the RF-603N II is mounted on the D5100, pressing the shutter does not trigger the remote flash. The transmitter’s test button does fire the flash, so the trigger and flash can communicate with each other.
Is there a known compatibility issue with the D5100, or is this more likely a hot-shoe connection problem?

With some camera/transmitter combinations it can be way too easy to to attach the transmitter facing the wrong direction on the hot shoe. It can also be easy to not push the transmitter all the way into the hot shoe. In either case, if the connection between the transmitter and camera are not properly aligned the camera can't communicate the signal to flash to the transmitter. So be sure the pins on the bottom of the transmitter and the contacts on the camera's hot show are lining up properly.

This sounds more like a mounting/contact issue than a known D5100 incompatibility.
If the RF-603N II test button fires the YN560 III, the trigger and flash are working together. The likely problem is that the camera isn’t making proper contact with the transmitter through the hot shoe.
Check these basics:
- Make sure the RF-603N II is mounted facing the correct direction.
- Slide it fully into the D5100 hot shoe.
- Confirm the pins on the bottom of the trigger line up with the camera’s hot-shoe contacts.
If the trigger is slightly misaligned or not fully seated, the camera can’t send the fire signal even though the transmitter itself still works from its test button. Reseating it carefully is the first thing to try.
