Why won’t a manual Yongnuo flash fire correctly in Live View on a Canon 77D?

I’m using a Canon 77D with a manual-only Yongnuo YN-560 IV. The flash works normally when shooting through the optical viewfinder, but in Live View it does not fire correctly. It may fire only in continuous/high-speed drive mode, and then it does not sync properly.
Canon’s manual says non-Canon flashes will not fire during Live View shooting, but I’m seeing partial behavior in burst mode. Is there any way to make a manual flash sync properly in Live View on this camera, or is this a limitation of the 77D?

With my ti2 non-Canon flash fires like it should when shooting through view finder but in live view it fires only if you use continuess shooting and then it fires on second exposure, not on first shot. So with live view you’ll have to Take two shots to have the flash exposure.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
This is essentially a camera limitation, not a setting you can force.
On Canon EOS bodies like the 77D, Live View generally does not properly support manual-only third-party flashes that the camera cannot detect/communicate with through the hot shoe. That’s why it works through the viewfinder but not in Live View. The burst-mode behavior is just a side effect and not proper flash synchronization.
So, with a YN-560 IV mounted directly on the hot shoe, there is no reliable way to make it sync correctly in Live View on this camera.
From the community answers, your practical options are:
- shoot through the optical viewfinder when using that flash
- use a flash/trigger setup that the camera can work with differently
- in at least one reported case, triggering via a PC sync connection worked in Live View
But as used directly, a manual non-Canon flash in Live View on the 77D is not supported.
