Why won't a Canon RC-6 remote trigger my EOS 550D?

I bought a Canon RC-6 infrared remote for my Canon EOS 550D, but pressing the button does nothing. I’ve seen it work with a 600D and read conflicting claims that the RC-6 may not work with some Canon models. Does the RC-6 work with the 550D, and if so, what settings need to be enabled for it to function?

Instructions for using the RC-6 with your camera can be found on page 204 of your instruction manual. In order for the remote to work, you must place your camera in the timer/remote shooting mode. It won't accept IR shutter release unless it is in this mode.

Yes — the Canon RC-6 does work with the EOS 550D. The usual issue is camera setup, not compatibility.

To use it, the camera must be set to the self-timer/remote control drive mode. If the camera is not in that mode, it will ignore the IR shutter signal.

Also check whether the camera’s remote setting is disabled in the menu. On related Canon models, this can be found in the movie mode menu, where the remote can be enabled or disabled. If your 550D has that option, make sure it is enabled.

One user also reported success by first trying full auto mode, which helped the camera recognize the remote, after which it also worked in other modes.

So in short: the RC-6 is compatible with the 550D; make sure the camera is in remote/self-timer drive mode, confirm remote operation is enabled in the menu, and aim the infrared remote at the camera’s receiver.
