Why won’t a Canon 70D trigger studio strobes through a Wein Safe-Sync?

I’m trying to fire a Novatron pack/head studio lighting kit from a Canon 70D using a Wein Safe-Sync on the hot shoe and a sync cable from the adapter to the pack. The same setup worked on an older Canon 10D, and a Canon Speedlite works normally on the 70D hot shoe. The camera’s built-in flash also works for Canon wireless flash triggering, but the studio strobes won’t fire through the Safe-Sync. What settings or compatibility issues should I check when using a hot-shoe-to-PC sync setup with the 70D?

This is a bit embarrassing as the fix was quite simple.
The Novatron pack I have has a H type (household) plug for the sync cable. Looks like a standard househould electrical receptacle.
The plug can go in both ways and apparently polarity is important with the 70D. After I plugged it in the pack the other way around the strobes started firing fine. It's been some time since I've used this kit.
The initial orientation of the plug worked fine with a 10D and some other cameras as well as my light meter.

Yes—this can work on the 70D. In the reported case, the actual fix was the Novatron pack’s household-style sync plug being inserted with the opposite polarity. Reversing that plug made the strobes fire normally.
Other 70D settings can also prevent triggering:
- Disable Live View silent shooting.
- Make sure Flash firing is enabled.
- If using Av mode, set flash sync speed in Av mode appropriately and keep shutter speed at or below normal flash sync limits.
- In External flash settings, use Manual flash mode and turn wireless functions off.
Since the same cable/adapter worked on another camera, check the sync plug orientation first, especially with older studio packs that use 2-prong household-style connectors. After that, verify the flash menu settings above. If a Speedlite fires from the hot shoe, the camera hot shoe itself is likely fine.
