Why must my Nikon 50mm lens be set to its minimum aperture on a D3200?

I’m using a Nikon D3200 with a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens. The camera says the lens aperture must be set to its lowest setting, and if I move the aperture ring I can’t control aperture normally. Also, autofocus does not work and I can only focus manually. Is there a setting I need to change, or is this expected behavior with this lens/camera combination?

@Scott Reed I have the same lens in Nikon F100. In my camera I have always set aperture to f22 in order to be able to set the aperture from the camera. Try to lock the lens in f22. Which exactly 50mm lens, do you have? Nikkor 50mm 1.8G or nikkor 50mm 1.8D? I am guessing that you have 1.8D which came without auto-focus motor. Moreover, neither the lens nor your camera have got auto-focus motor, thus it's normal that you can't auto-focus.

This is expected if your lens is the AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D (the version with an aperture ring). On Nikon bodies like the D3200, that lens should be set to its minimum aperture, f/22, and locked there. Then you change aperture using the camera’s controls, not the lens ring.
If the aperture ring is not set to f/22, the camera will warn you that the aperture must be at its lowest setting.
Manual focus only is also expected with the 50mm f/1.8D on a D3200. The D3200 does not have an in-body autofocus motor, and the 50mm f/1.8D relies on the camera body’s motor for autofocus. Since neither the camera nor that lens provides the AF motor, autofocus will not work.
If you want autofocus on the D3200, look for the AF-S 50mm f/1.8G version instead.
