Nikon 28mm f/2.8D aperture ring lock won’t move on a D600

I bought a used Nikon 28mm f/2.8D to use on my D600. This lens needs to be set to its minimum aperture (f/22) and locked there, but the aperture ring/lock won’t move. I don’t want to force it and damage the lens. If the lock is stuck, is there anything I can safely try, or does this usually mean the lens needs repair?

The aperture ring lock only locks the aperture to minimum aperture (f/22 on this lens). If the lock is engaged, your ring will be at f/22 and will not be movable. If your aperture ring is on another aperture, chances are that the lock is not actually enabled, but rather, the mechanism is jammed. In this case, you'll need to have your lens professionally serviced.

I owned this lens for many years and its diaphragm jammed up with lubricant from inside the lens, so there's a decent chance that the same has happened to you. If the blades are jammed, the ring won't turn.

On this lens, the lock only secures the aperture ring at the minimum aperture, which is f/22. So if the ring is already at f/22 and won’t move, that can be normal because the lock is doing its job.

If the ring is not at f/22 and still won’t move, the lock is probably not the real issue—the aperture mechanism may be jammed. On older used lenses, this can happen if lubricant migrates inside and causes the diaphragm or aperture linkage to stick.

The safest advice is: don’t force it. If the ring is stuck away from f/22, the lens likely needs professional service/repair rather than a DIY fix.
