Why isn’t the AE-L button working on my Fujifilm X-T4?

On my Fujifilm X-T4, pressing the rear AE-L button appears to do nothing: I don’t see the AE lock indicator, either while holding the button or when AE/AF lock is set to switch/toggle mode. I’ve confirmed the button itself works by assigning it to another function, and I’ve tested different focus modes, metering modes, ISO settings, and reset the camera. Face detection is off, and firmware is current. What setting would prevent AE lock from working?

You have to have shutter-speed set to AUTO for AEL to work.
Without the camera being on auto, it can't set the shutter speed, which is obvious, unfortunately it had been so long since I'd used auto-exposure I'd forgotten that's all it actually does.
Realised after comparing the behaviour of my Fuji X70, which likewise displays the shutter speed as soon as you press or toggle your AE button.

AE lock only works when the camera is actually controlling exposure. On the X-T4, if shutter speed is not set to AUTO, AE-L may appear to do nothing because there’s no auto exposure value for the camera to lock.
Set shutter speed to AUTO and try again. In an auto-exposure mode, pressing AE-L should lock the metered exposure and show the AE lock indicator.
If you’re using full manual exposure, AE-L generally has no effect because you’re already setting exposure yourself. That’s why the button can seem broken even though it’s correctly assigned and physically functional.
