Why isn’t a rangefinder viewfinder positioned directly above the lens?

Rangefinder cameras don’t show the scene through the taking lens, so framing can differ from the final image because of parallax. It seems like putting the main viewfinder directly above the lens would at least reduce left-right parallax. Why are rangefinder viewfinders usually placed off to the side instead? Is this due to how the rangefinder mechanism works, lens blockage, ergonomics, or some combination of factors?

Rangefinders use two "viewports" in order to get the split image to aid in focusing.

If you look closely you will see the second little window usually near the lens itself.

It would be possible to reverse to the position of the two "viewports" but there would still be vertical parallax error.

Since there will always be some form of parallax error, it is better to keep the primary viewfinder away from the lens.

A rangefinder uses separate windows for viewing and focusing, so moving the main viewfinder directly above the lens wouldn’t eliminate parallax entirely—it would only trade horizontal parallax for vertical parallax. Since some parallax will always remain on a non-TTL system, there isn’t a complete framing advantage to putting it above the lens.

There are also practical reasons for the usual offset placement. Keeping the main finder away from the lens helps avoid the lens obstructing part of the view. And the traditional top-left position has ergonomic benefits: your right eye can get close to the finder without your nose pressing awkwardly into the camera back, and your other eye can stay open more easily to watch the scene around the frame.

So the offset finder is a compromise: parallax can’t be fully removed anyway, and the side position often gives a clearer view and better handling.
