Why is one side of my phone photo sharp while the other side is blurry?

On my Xiaomi Mi A2, photos of distant subjects are consistently sharp on one side of the frame but blurry on the other. In one example, an object very close to the phone on the left side is sharp while the rest of that side is not. This happens repeatedly, especially when photographing things far away. What could cause this?

The lens is tilted and/or shifted.

Sometimes, these kinds of effects are desirable, such as this picture which is called tilt-shift photography.

Since this is a very cheap phone and not an interchangeable lens camera, repairing it would likely cost more than the value of the phone.

Solution: get a new camera, either phone if that's what floats your boat or a better camera.

This pattern usually points to a hardware problem: the phone’s lens module is likely tilted, shifted, or otherwise badly misaligned. When that happens, the plane of focus is uneven across the image, so one side can look sharp while the other stays blurry.

Because the blur is consistent and affects one side of the frame repeatedly, it’s unlikely to be normal autofocus behavior. A drop or shock could have caused it, but it can also be due to poor assembly or a defect.

On a phone camera, this generally isn’t a practical repair unless it’s under warranty. The best options are:

  • test with a different camera app to rule out software,
  • check whether the phone is still under warranty or return period,
  • otherwise replace the phone or use another camera.

In short: this is most likely a misaligned lens, not a shooting technique issue.
