Why is my Sony A7S II choosing very high ISO and 1/8000s in Aperture Priority?

My Sony A7S II has started selecting combinations like ISO 12800 and 1/8000s in Aperture Priority mode. I’m wondering what setting could cause this behavior and whether I may have changed something by accident.

On some SONY Alpha cameras there is a setting for minimum shutter speed. It give you a option (when use AutoISO) to set more modest or more aggressive shutter speed. Please check, maybe you set somehow this option to very aggressive value. You can found it at MENU> Camera Settings>ISO AUTO Min. SS.

The options are:

  • FASTER (Faster)/FAST (Fast)
  • STD (Standard)
  • SLOW (Slow)/SLOWER (Slower)
  • 1/4000―30"

You can find more information in the manual.

This is usually caused by Auto ISO’s minimum shutter speed setting.

On some Sony Alpha bodies, including the A7S II, Aperture Priority with Auto ISO can be told to prioritize a faster shutter speed. If that setting is set to a very aggressive value, the camera may raise ISO a lot in order to keep shutter speed extremely high, leading to combinations like ISO 12800 and 1/8000s.

Check: Menu > Camera Settings > ISO AUTO Min. SS

Possible options include values like:

  • faster / fast
  • std
  • slow / slower
  • specific shutter speeds

If it was set to a very fast option or a high minimum shutter speed, changing it back to Standard or a slower value should make exposure choices look more reasonable.
