Why is my Nikon D3300 live view half dark, and can I fix it myself?

My Nikon D3300 is nearly new and has only been used a couple of times. When I switch to live view, the screen shows a normal image on one side and a very dark image on the other, while the menu/settings display looks normal. The camera hasn’t been dropped or abused. Does this indicate a sensor or connection fault, and is there anything I can do myself, or should it go back to the seller/Nikon for warranty service?

It looks like either the sensor is broken, or possibly something is wrong in its data connection to the rest of the camera. Either way, there is nothing you can do about this.

Since you just bought the camera, you may be able to return it, but that will depend on the seller's policies and perhaps on local law. Otherwise, call Nikon and send the camera in for repair or exchange. There should be no problem at all with this being covered by Nikon under warranty.

A half-dark live view image on an otherwise new D3300 strongly suggests a hardware fault, most likely with the image sensor or its connection to the camera’s processing electronics. Since the menus display normally, the LCD itself is probably not the issue.

There isn’t a practical user fix for this. If the camera is newly purchased, the best course is to return or exchange it through the seller if possible. If not, contact Nikon for warranty repair/service. A defect like this on a new camera should normally be covered under warranty.
