Canon EOS 350D mirror isn’t moving correctly and photos are half black

My Canon EOS 350D has developed a mirror/mechanism problem. When I take a photo, the mirror assembly doesn’t appear to move correctly, and the resulting image is half black because part of the sensor seems to be obstructed. The camera is about 9 years old and hasn’t been dropped or exposed to unusual conditions. Is there any maintenance or safe fix I can try myself, or does this need professional service?

Contact service or give it a rest. I understand how much you are unwilling to do so, but you should let a pro to fix your lovely camera.

This sounds like a mechanical mirror/shutter issue rather than routine maintenance. If the mirror mechanism isn’t completing its movement, it can obstruct the sensor and cause the half-black frame you’re seeing.

Based on the advice given, this is not something to force or try to adjust yourself. The safest options are:

  • stop using it for now
  • let it rest in case the mechanism is sticking intermittently
  • have it inspected by a professional camera service technician

There isn’t really a common user-service procedure for repairing a DSLR mirror mechanism. Attempting to poke, lubricate, or realign it yourself could easily make the damage worse. On an older camera like the 350D, a repair shop can tell you whether it’s practical to fix.
