Why is my Nikon D300S changing shutter speed between shots?

While shooting a show with my Nikon D300S, I noticed the shutter speed changed every time I took a shot, almost like the camera was bracketing. I’m not sure what setting might have been turned on or why it started. What camera settings should I check to stop the shutter speed from changing between frames?

The most likely cause is an automatic exposure feature being enabled rather than a shutter problem. On a Nikon D300S, check these first:
- Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB): If bracketing is on, the camera will intentionally vary exposure between shots.
- Auto ISO: If enabled, the camera may change shutter speed to maintain exposure depending on your mode.
- Exposure mode: In Aperture Priority, Program, or any auto mode, shutter speed can change from shot to shot as the metering changes. Use Manual mode if you want it locked.
- Exposure compensation: If set unintentionally, it can affect the chosen exposure.
- Custom/self-timer or special release modes: Resetting these can help rule out odd behavior.
If you need a quick fix before your next shoot, reset the shooting settings/menu and confirm bracketing is off. Then test in Manual mode with Auto ISO disabled; if shutter speed stays constant there, the camera is likely working normally and a setting caused the changes.
