Why is my Canon PowerShot SX20 showing a completely white live view and saving all-white photos?

My Canon PowerShot SX20 suddenly started showing a completely white image on both the LCD and in the viewfinder. The menus display normally, but the live view stays pure white even in a dark room. When I take a photo, it saves to the memory card, but the image is also entirely white. The camera was not dropped or handled roughly. What could cause this?

Sounds like you need to take it in to get serviced - the sensor or processing of sensor data is clearly not working correctly.

This points to a hardware fault in the image-capture path, not a settings issue. Because the menus display normally but both live view and saved photos are completely white, the problem is likely with the sensor, its connection, or the camera’s main processing board.
In other words, the camera can still power on and display overlays, but it is not receiving or processing normal image data from the sensor. A loose/broken sensor cable, failed sensor, or mainboard fault are all plausible causes.
Since the issue affects both preview and recorded images, it will likely need professional service rather than a reset or menu change.
