Why is Live View overexposed on my Nikon D5600 while the photos look normal?

On my Nikon D5600, Live View has suddenly become extremely bright, to the point that I can barely see the subject. However, the actual captured photos look normal. If I half-press the shutter to focus, the Live View exposure looks correct for a moment, then becomes too bright again. What setting could cause this, and how can I fix it?

Checkout your screen brightness in the menu option!

The most likely cause is exposure compensation being set too high in Live View. On the D5600, if exposure compensation has been bumped up (for example to +5.0), the Live View preview can look massively overexposed even though your final image may not match what you’re seeing.
Try this:
- Enter Live View.
- Press the "i" button.
- Look for the exposure compensation setting on the screen.
- Set it back to 0.0.
Also check your LCD brightness setting, since an overly bright screen can make the preview misleading.
One other normal behavior: in Live View the lens may stay wide open until focus or exposure preview is triggered, so the preview can briefly change when you half-press the shutter. But if the screen is wildly bright all the time, exposure compensation is the first thing to reset.
