Why is a thick black diagonal band appearing in every photo from my Canon XTi?

My Canon XTi is putting a thick diagonal black band across every photo. When I use the camera’s manual sensor cleaning mode to raise the mirror, I can see a plastic-looking piece partly covering the sensor area, and it seems to still be attached. What is this part, and what kind of fault would cause this?

From what I see this is element from the shutter. And my humble advise is to send your camera to repair shop, give it in to the hands of professional, do not try to repair it.

This is most likely a failed shutter blade. The part you see in front of the sensor is not something that should be there during an exposure, and a damaged or stuck shutter curtain can create a dark band across every image.
This is a hardware failure, not a sensor-cleaning issue or a software setting problem. It is not a practical DIY fix, because the shutter assembly needs professional repair or replacement.
Best next step: stop using the camera and take it to a qualified camera repair shop, or compare repair cost versus replacing the body.
