Why doesn’t the exposure meter show on a Nikon D3200 with manual focus, and how can I work around it?

I’m using a Nikon D3200 and experimenting with manual focus. When I switch to manual focus, I don’t see the exposure meter in the viewfinder, which makes it harder to set exposure quickly. Is this normal on the D3200, especially with manual-focus or non-CPU lenses? What are the practical workarounds?

Nikon D3200, being an entry-level camera, doesn't meter with manual focus lenses that don't have CPU contacts in them, so you can use it only in manual exposure mode.

To deal with this limitation you can:

  • Use a dedicated external light meter, a light meter app for a smartphone, or meter the exposure using another camera
  • Use "Sunny 16" rule
  • Guess the exposure
  • Make test shots and correct the exposure using preview and histogram on the camera screen as a guide
  • Get a higher level camera body that supports metering with non-CPU lenses

Yes—this can be normal on the D3200, depending on the lens and exposure mode.

If you’re using a manual-focus lens without CPU contacts, the D3200 does not meter with it, so you must use manual exposure and estimate exposure another way. Common workarounds are:

  • use an external light meter or smartphone light meter app
  • use the Sunny 16 rule
  • take test shots and adjust using the LCD preview and histogram
  • meter with another camera

If you mean you are using manual focus and manual exposure together, the viewfinder may show the focus confirmation/telemeter instead of the light meter. In that case, you can:

  • switch to Aperture priority or Shutter priority so the camera handles exposure
  • briefly switch to autofocus to read/set exposure, then return to manual focus
  • use a handheld meter

In short: the D3200 has limited support for older manual/non-CPU lenses, so these are workarounds rather than a full fix.
