Can the Nikon D3000 show the electronic rangefinder in Manual mode with a non-CPU AI lens?

I'm using a manual-focus Vivitar 70-210 on a Nikon D3000. Because the lens is non-CPU, the camera doesn't provide metering information, and I'm finding it hard to focus accurately through the small viewfinder. The D3000's electronic rangefinder appears in P, S, and A modes, but in Manual mode the viewfinder shows the exposure meter area instead. Is there any way to make the D3000 display the full electronic rangefinder indicators in Manual mode when using an AI/non-CPU lens?

According to "Nikon D3000 for Dummies" that I managed to hit through Google books, in manual mode the viewfinder always displays the exposure meter. You can try this link to see what they say, but I'm not sure if the link to it will work.

No. On the Nikon D3000, Manual mode uses that viewfinder display area for the exposure meter, so the electronic rangefinder indicators are not shown there in M mode. With a non-CPU manual lens, the camera still can't meter normally, so there isn’t a setting to force the full rangefinder display in Manual.

What you can rely on is the in-focus confirmation dot in the viewfinder, which still lights when focus is achieved. If you want the directional rangefinder guidance, use P, S, or A mode, where the camera can show those indicators even though metering with a non-CPU lens is limited.
