Why doesn’t AF-assist work from a flash mounted on a PocketWizard MiniTT1?

I’m using a PocketWizard MiniTT1 on the camera and a FlexTT5 on a remote flash, and E-TTL triggering works normally. I’d like to use the AF-assist beam from a Canon flash or ST-E2 mounted on the MiniTT1, but the assist light does not activate. If I mount the same flash directly on the camera hot shoe, AF-assist works as expected. Is this normal, and is there any way to make AF-assist work through the MiniTT1?

The problem was tackled some time ago in forum of Photography On The Net, where it was suggested that a test shot is needed before AF assist will start working.

Yes—this is a known behavior with the MiniTT1. The AF-assist signal may not pass through or activate immediately the way it does when the flash is mounted directly on the camera. Community reports indicate that the AF-assist can start working only after taking a test shot first.

So if you need the assist beam, try firing a shot after mounting the flash on the MiniTT1, then half-press focus again. If it still doesn’t work, the practical takeaway is that AF-assist through the trigger is not as reliable as direct hot-shoe mounting.

In short: your trigger is likely functioning normally for E-TTL, but AF-assist behavior through the MiniTT1 is limited/quirky compared with putting the flash directly on the camera.
